Definition
VLIR-UOS launched its ICP PhD programme in 2003 to enable promising graduates of International Courses to study for a PhD at a Flemish university. ICPs are master programmes that receive institutional support from VLIR-UOS (see list of master programmes). Up to ten ICP PhD scholarships can be granted every academic year to excellent ICP graduates from a developing country.
The purpose of the ICP PhD programme is to build capacity at universities or research institutions in developing countries to strengthen them institutionally by improving the expertise of local academic staff by means of PhD scholarships. Only ICP graduates that are nationals of a developing country are eligible for an ICP PhD scholarship (see the call for all criteria).
Practical
An ICP PhD scholarship consists of two two-year terms, and cannot be extended. It is a 'sandwich' scholarship, which means that two-thirds of the research is normally conducted at the local institution and one-third at the Flemish university. The scholar is free to choose the periods of time spent in Belgium and the home country, albeit in agreement with promoters in both countries. However, for practical reasons the scholar is obliged to come to Belgium when the scholarship commences, i.e. 1 October of the reference year. Funding is provided at both scholar and local/Flemish promoter level (see the call for more details).
The call will be launched in November 2011.
Deadline for applications is February (dates vary depending on the Flemish university, see the call for more details).
Selection takes place in May.
Selected PhD researchers start in October of that year.
