With roots going back to 1852, University of Antwerp is characterised by its high standards in education, internationally competitive research, and service to the regional, national and international communities. With approx. 10000 students, among whom 12% international students, the university is the third largest university in Flanders, located in the economic heart of Belgium, Antwerp. Being a port of major importance and a leading commercial and industrial centre, the city has always played an important cultural and historical role in Western Europe and provides an excellent climate for education and research.
The University of Antwerp offers a wide range of study programmes within its 7 faculties, 18 institutes and many different centres. Education is student-centered and competency based. Students are stimulated to develop into independently minded people who are capable of thinking analytically.
Academic teaching at the university is closely linked to ambitious and innovative research at an international level. In addition to fundamental scientific research, a great deal of applied and policy-oriented research is carried out for supranational, federal and regional governments as well as for the private sector.
Particular attention is given to topics like equal opportunities, multiculturalism, equal access to higher education and the international dimension in all the university’s activities.
The various campuses are situated in the historical centre of Antwerp and in the leafy suburbs of the city. The university of Antwerp has a university hospital, a language centre, libraries on all campuses, computer labs, restaurants and cafeterias, several student associations and sports centres.
